Parents: Get involved!

As a parent, you have a key role in influencing your child's quality of education. School administrators and elected officials find parents to be the voice of reason on issues affecting our classrooms. The personal examples of your child's education experiences can be striking examples of what is really happening in schools.

Your views are imperative to make our schools a priority. Share your thoughts and experiences with your school board members, school administrators and lawmakers by dropping them an e-mail, calling their office, or making an appointment to sit down and have a conversation.

If our leaders don't know there are problems in our schools, they won't act. But by getting involved and being an advocate you can make a difference to keep quality education, small class sizes, and retaining quality teachers top priorities in Florida.

Plus, there are simple things you can do to create a more secure and rich learning environment for your child.

Involvement in your child's education can mean:

  • Reading to your child
  • Checking homework every night
  • Discussing your children's progress with teachers
  • Voting in school board elections
  • Helping your school to set challenging academic standards
  • Becoming an advocate for better education in your community and state
  • Visiting your child's classroom
  • Volunteering for field trips, tutoring, sports, club activities, booster clubs, etc.
  • Giving input for the school newsletter or bulletin
  • Limiting TV viewing on school nights
  • Talking with your child about their day
